Articling Students
Our lawyers come from diverse personal, educational, professional, and cultural backgrounds – a diversity we believe creates a challenging and stimulating environment in which to practice law.
Davis LLP attracts top graduates from leading law schools in Canada and elsewhere, many of whom have completed clerkships with courts at various levels, including the Federal Court of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition, a number of our lawyers have received masters and doctorates in law and other disciplines from leading international academic institutions, including: Cambridge University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Oxford University and the University of London.
The diverse background of the members of the firm is also reflected in the number of different languages spoken around the office, including Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese and Korean.
Davis & Company LLP is proud of the spirit of collegiality and co-operation which exists among our students, lawyers and staff. We maintain an open, pleasant and informal working environment. Students are treated as valued professionals from their first day onward.
Numerous social functions throughout the year give students many opportunities to get to know the lawyers and staff in the firm. Whenever a group of students is called to the Bar, the group is honoured at a gathering of the entire office. Our lawyers' lounges provide an opportunity for members of the firm to gather informally on a regular basis.
We encourage our lawyers and students to maintain a balanced lifestyle and we respect their commitments to family and outside interests. Among our lawyers are a top-ranked amateur golfer, an international dragon boat competitor and a former Olympic hockey player. Others are actively involved in the arts. The firm sponsors hockey, softball, volleyball, skiing, dragon boat racing, curling, running and basketball teams and it also participates in a number of charitable fund-raising events.
Davis & Company LLP provides students with an opportunity for well-rounded articles. Students draw on large pools of expertise in a stable, established environment. We strive to create a small-firm collegial atmosphere with the benefits of big-firm practice.

We Might Just Be The Right Fit...
With just over 700 lawyers practicing in virtually every area of law and with offices in all of Canada's major financial centres, as well as in London, U.K., the pace at McCarthy Tétrault is dynamic and exciting. While the workload, demands and expectations placed on our students are high, so are the rewards.
We run on diversity.
At McCarthy Tétrault, we place great value on the diversity of our people, looking for the most skillful and promising individuals from a range of backgrounds, cultures, interests and opinions. That means you'll be given the opportunity to thrive in a supportive, highly inclusive environment that encourages individuality and rewards initiative.
You'll never walk alone.
Cultivating the next generation of lawyers means living up to the promises we make to students. We don't expect them to arrive at our doors with their careers pre-planned and ready for execution. Nor do we push them into prescribed roles. Rather, we seek to attract the finest minds and offer them a sophisticated venue in which to explore their potential.
Think globally.
McCarthy Tétrault is involved in many important and complex business transactions and cases throughout the world. From mining projects in Africa and trade disputes in the US to mergers and acquisitions in Asia and telecom and energy projects in Russia, opportunities abound for students to work on international files.
Every day is not the same.
The atmosphere at McCarthy Tétrault is never boring or stuffy. Our culture is fuelled by openness, energy and the exchange of ideas. Students have plenty of occasions to mix with peers, lawyers and staff on a professional and social level.
There's nothing like a little teamwork.
Many projects require teams to be drawn from a number of practice areas and from across the country. As a student, you will be treated as a valued member of the team. You will play an important role and your contributions will make a difference. You will garner first-hand experience interacting with clients, attending strategy sessions and going to court. You will also receive the same skilled paralegal, secretarial and technical support services that are provided to our lawyers.
Express yourself.
If you're ready to take the next step and apply for an articling or summer student position, send your cover letter, résumé and transcripts of law school and undergraduate grades to the attention of the Student Programmes Coordinator in the city of your choice. Then, prepare to kick-start your career.

We're Looking for Future Partners.
At Clark Wilson LLP, we take our articling program very seriously. We don't recruit for the short term; we're looking for people who possess the traits and attributes to become successful associates, and ultimately our future partners. That's not something we take lightly. We put a great deal of time, energy and resources into providing an articling program that we believe to be amongst the best available.
As a leading British Columbia law firm, we are focused on our vision to be the law firm of choice for business in BC. Our service offerings include the core and complementary practice areas that BC's businesses and business leaders require. For our students, this means that we are able to offer you the best attributes of a large law firm - exposure to many different areas of law, challenging work, and a broad client base - without sacrificing the benefits of a closer, more hands-on environment.
Our students tell us that they are thrilled with the opportunity to work closely with experienced practitioners on quality files for large clients, while also having enough autonomy to handle their own workload. This is important for both firm and student. Once you have completed your rotations in each of our business / solicitors and litigation departments, you are able to make informed decisions about the type of work that you would like to do and with whom you may wish to work. We, in turn, are able to place you in an area that is best suited to your interests and skills.
The result is a more fulfilling career for you, better service for our clients, and a better firm for all of us.

Articling With Blakes
Articling Rotation System
At Blakes, we try to ensure that you receive well-rounded articles by getting experience in different areas of law. This ensures that they obtain broad exposure to the principal areas of our practice under the individual guidance and supervision of experienced lawyers in each of these areas.
We want our students to receive exposure to the core areas of our practice. We believe that our rotation program best allows us to develop and assess our students and gives them individual attention.
In our Vancouver office, students do rotations in the following areas:
- Corporate-Commercial
(Including Commercial Real Estate, Financial Services, Tax etc.)
- Litigation
(Including Environmental Law, Aboriginal Law, Labour and Employment)
Mentoring
During each articling student rotation, students are assigned a mentor. The most important role of a mentor is to make sure a student gets a good work experience at the firm. Mentors give the students work directly, but also make a concerted effort to find work for the student with partners and senior associates at the firm in the rotation practice area. A mentor also helps the student deal with work flow, shows them precedents, reviews their work and gives the student advice about work styles of different lawyers.
The mentor will also ensure that students receive ongoing feedback on their work and will prepare a written evaluation of the student's performance at the end of each rotation.
We evaluate our students twice during each rotation. These evaluations provide useful and constructive information for the students and afford students a formal opportunity to express their views on the firm, the opportunities given to them, and the direction they would like to see for the balance of their articling year. This is in addition to the "open-door" approach we have for accessibility to all lawyers.
On an ongoing basis, members of the Students Committee are available for ongoing assistance and problem-solving with respect to student issues.
Professional Development
When articling students start at Blakes, they receive an orientation on the resources at the firm. We have a series of monthly in-house seminars to supplement our rotation program. The seminars cover topics ranging from the development of basic practice skills to introductions to specific practice areas, and in the past few years have included general overviews of the following topics:
- Mortgages
- Intellectual Property
- Mock Motion
- Bankruptcy & Insolvency
- Commercial Leases
- Securities
- Due Diligence
- Buying and Selling a Business
- Factum Writing
- Agreements of Purchase and Sale
- Incorporation
- Professional Responsibility
Social Events
Social events are a great way to get to know the lawyers and other students at the firm. Throughout the articling year, students have the chance to participate in a range of social events. In addition to our Christmas dinner party, we hold an event in the summer or fall which in the past has included a river cruise, train cruise, Halloween party and barbecue/picnic. Spouses or significant others are invited to attend many of these events.
We have additional social functions tailored specifically to lawyers and students, including dinners and casual social get-togethers. We believe that our size, our relative youth and the characteristics that we look for in our students and lawyers make our office a friendly, as well as exciting, place to practice law.
The "nuts & bolts" of articling
The Law Society of British Columbia requires students to complete the Law Society Admission Program (LSAP) which consists of : nine months of articling; 10 weeks of full-time attendance at the Professional Legal Training Course (PLTC); and two qualification examinations based on the PLTC practice material and course work.
At Blakes, we strongly encourage all of our articling students to complete their PLTC before starting the articling period at the firm.
At Blakes, we pay salary and all course fees for the PLTC, regardless of whether the student is hired back as an associate.
The Law Society also grants 10 days of vacation during your articles.
The current annual salary for articling students is $45,000. We pay a salary comparable to the highest paid students at Vancouver firms.
Our students are covered by British Columbia MSP (family coverage), extended medical coverage, a dental plan and an employee assistance program.

About Bacchus
Bacchus is a boutique firm of U.S. securities and corporate lawyers based in Vancouver, B.C. Our team-based firm works closely with new, high-growth companies from quotation on an automated dealer quotation system such as the OTC Bulletin Board to listing on national exchanges such as the American Stock Exchange. We draw upon big firm expertise, but provide small firm personal service, efficiency, speed and effectiveness. During and beyond taking companies public, we focus on requirements specific to the company’s stage of growth, and help them think about their corporate structure, governance and business in new and better ways.
We represent medium and small private and public companies, officers and directors, public company boards and board committees, brokers, venture capitalists and investment banks in all kinds of transactions.
Our practice isn’t limited by language or geographical boundaries. We represent dozens of international companies, including companies located in Canada, US, China, Hong Kong and Europe that operate across borders or want to access US or Canadian capital markets. Our lawyers are licensed in multiple jurisdictions, including the US and Canada; speak English, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Ukrainian, Polish and Russian; and understand the culture in business and on the ground in countries around the world.
Employment:
We provide one of the few intensive corporate and securities law articling experiences in Vancouver. Our articling students are given substantial responsibilities, handling their own files and interacting closely with clients.
In most cases, our students are involved in the process of taking a company public, from start to finish. They assist clients with incorporations, minute book set ups, annual and quarterly report filing, finance agreements, mergers and acquisitions, registration statements, communications with securities regulators and stock exchanges and dispute resolution. And all summer students are involved in researching corporate and legal topics as well as developing and carrying out marketing strategies.
We offer a salary competitive with that of most Vancouver firms, provide a full salary during PLTC attendance and pay all PLTC fees.
We have regular social activities with staff and clients such as lunches, dinners, receptions and special events.
Articling
We have hired two articled students for 2008-2009. Interviews for articles in 2009-2010 will take place during “Interview Week,” in accordance with the guidelines established by the Vancouver Bar Association. Only those applicants that are granted interviews will be contacted.
Summering
We will be hiring one student each year for summer articles, and have not yet hired a student for 2008. Only those applicants that are granted interviews will be contacted.
Qualifications and Application Process
We are looking for candidates with an interest in securities law or finance. A background in business or accounting, though useful, is not required. Our lawyers have strong communication and analytical skills and possess the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. If you fit these criteria, please forward your application, including cover letter, CV, transcripts and a sample of your writing to Adel Tagirova, Legal Assistant at atagirova@bacchuscorplaw.com.
Contact Us
If you have any questions about the firm or the application process, please contact Ms. Jenna Virk, Associate, at jvirk@bacchuscorplaw.com.
Questions regarding the articling experience may be directed to our current articled students, Konrad Malik and Christopher Little, at kmalik@bacchuscorplaw.com and clittle@bacchuscorplaw.com, respectively. |
